2025 Guide to Traveling with Pets in Singapore: MRT, Buses, Grab Pet, and More

Navigating Singapore's public transportation system with pets requires understanding specific rules and regulations. This comprehensive guide covers all your options for traveling with pets in Singapore.

Public Transportation Options

MRT and LRT, Public Buses No animals are allowed on or into the premises of the MRT/LRT and on buses, whether with or without a carrier. The only exception to this are guide dogs (who are accompanying a person with visual or hearing impairment) and police dogs.

Private Transportation Services

Since pets are not allowed on all forms of public transport, the only viable options are private transportation. However, it is useful to understand that there are still restrictions or constraints in place, depending on the service provider:

Grab Pet

When booking your ride through the Grab app, select the GrabPet option. Fares start from $14, and your pet(s) is covered by GrabPet's Group Pet Insurance when you make a GrabPet booking. A few things to note:

  • GrabPet cars have a seat cover for you to put your pet on

  • Required carriers:

    • Dogs have to be leashed or crated

    • Cats, Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Hamsters, Gerbils, Mice, Chinchillas, other small mammals have to be crated

    • Fish have to be in a sealed bag or closed tank

    • Small turtles, crabs, frogs, and other non-prohibited amphibians have to be in a closed container

  • Maximum 2 medium-sized pets (e.g. dogs of 31-40.5cm) or 1 large pet (e.g. dogs >41cm)

  • Still, the driver may refuse your pet if you want the pet to travel unaccompanied or if your pet is aggressive.

Taxi Services

Yes, you can take a standard taxi. Taxis that are operated by Comfort, Strides Premier (newly formed in 2024 from the merger of SMRT's Strides taxis with Premier Taxis) and Prime allow pets. However, animals must be caged or muzzled to be let into the cab, with the exception of guide dogs for the visually-disabled. It is also useful to know that, ultimately, the decision of whether to ferry you and your pet is left to the driver.

When you make your booking, it is useful to inform the driver in advance through the comments section. In ComfortDelgro's Zig App, you can add comments as follows:

Do note that it's still a bit of a risk. Drivers don't always read the notes carefully before accepting a booking and may reject it after they have arrived and realize they have to ferry a pet. It's all fairly understandable, as not all pet owners are gracious and considerate. There have been stories of animals pooping or soiling the backseat and cabbies having to spend hours scrubbing out the stains and trying to get rid of the odour afterwards before they can continue work (and paying their rent). So in essence, we can probably agree that in reality, it's better to look for other more predictable alternatives like Pet Transport, or drive your pet if you can.

Tips to make the journey easy

Pick the right carrier

Picking the right carrier can really help keep your pet feeling comfortable and safe. Choose something that is:

  • Well-ventilated,

  • has secure latches or restraints (such as a bag buckle that can hook onto your dog's collar),

  • has a wide-enough bottom for your pet to stand and turn, and

  • line the bottom with something water-resistant such as a pee-pad, just in case.

If your pet is new to the carrier, it's a good idea to do a few test-runs with them in it first. You can just put your pet into the carrier in the house, or walk around with him/her in it, etc.

Familiarizing your dog or pet with its carrier in the safe and happy environment of your home is a great way to create positive associations with the carrier, making it a breeze the next time you go out

Don't forget the necessities!

Tired pets will often sleep easily through the entire journey, so one tried and tested method is to exercise your pet before the journey. Then, don't forget your pet essentials such as:

  • Water bottle

  • Collapsible bowl

  • Treats

  • Poop bags

  • Pet wipes

  • Comfort toy, if any (some pets have a favourite plushie or item that helps them stay calm)

Taking Your Own Car?: Private Vehicle Transportation

You might not know this but you can get a fine up to $1,000 if you are deemed to engage in unsafe transport, such as if you are distracted by your pet. For your own safety (and of course, everyone's safety), it's best that your pet is properly secured in a carrier and that the carrier is also properly secured. Ultimately, do what feels best for you and your pet.

Tips for Stress-Free Travel

  1. Familiarize pet with carrier beforehand

  2. Start with short trips

  3. Maintain regular feeding schedule

  4. Bring familiar toys or blankets

  5. Plan bathroom breaks for longer journeys
